1-Who are you?

Hello my name is Endre, I am from Budapest (Hungary) from a family of polymaths from my fathers side, and protestant priests from my mothers side - what a mix! I grew up in ex Yugoslavia (now Serbia) in Novi Sad. That gave me a huge impact affecting my life. So when the Balkan War started in ‘91, had to move to Hungary without my family, and since then I have lived here.

I started studying arts in high school, had a nice selection to learn about, but two techniques stuck with me: etching and inking. After finishing High School, I studied Visual Communication at Budapest Teacher Training College - a huge spread of art techniques on display, and had a chance to learn from the best teachers, who were actually teachers at the Budapest College of Fine Arts. So I picked up sculpting, photography, etching and inking again. Meanwhile, I started working as a junior graphic designer at a small studio - first baby steps to the amazing creative world.

After college I decided to add something extra to it, and that was when I went to the Faculty of Architecture at Technical University of Budapest, where I studied interior design, industrial design, color dynamics and so called Computer graphics.

With all this knowledge and skills, it was time to start to do the real thing, sooo that is how I got myself into the creative business. Since then I had a chance to work with some great brands here and there, and also met amazing people, but my biggest love through these years stayed drawing and creative street art.

2-What do you do for a living? How does making art fit in your life?

These days I work as a Senior Graphic Designer/ Art Director at a mid company where I am supporting the marketing team. A nice job beside which I can focus on my “sticker parade” and drawing/painting. Recently I decided to upgrade my skill set by starting to do concept art and character designs.

Making art is my undercover life sometimes, meaning graffiti - only legal - and sticker placements throughout the city, it gives me a boost and a refill of energy that I can put in to my digital art. Sometimes I do crossovers on platforms. (Barcelona graffiti - Samurai / Samurai drawing). Funny thing is that there is always time for something to be made, even if it is just a quick sketch or a multi day drawing. Art finds it’s time. 🙂

3-What helps you find inspiration personally? What do you think helped you develop your art style?

Inspiration can come from anywhere. It can be the smallest thing, like a leaf floating in the breeze to a huge sensual impact given by somebody or something. A form, shape, color, a sound that you have walked by for days and suddenly you recognize it as a trigger that gets your brain going.

Japanese art techniques (typography and art brushes) had a huge impact in the very beginning than hatching and inking came to lay down the basics. Through the years watercolor and graffiti were the two styles that pushed me forward in my art style development. Also 3D added a huge impact.

Right now I am combining several styles to express my state of mind (robots with feelings).

4-Name a couple or three artists that you admire, and that made an influence in your own art.

My first huge inspiration was The Art of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Game Stephanie Tabat (Author), Roy E. Parker (Contributor) back in the 90’s and japanese arts of samurai and typography.

The amazing Katerina Belikova, aka NinjaJo on instagram, who handles the lights and characters in an amazing way that is very close to my mindset, and has the way of combining feelings with robots that is just amazing for me.

Last but not least, two great artists, Philip Sue and Mitch Leeuwe, who had a great impact on my ways of building up compositions, color sets and have amazing tips and tricks.

5-What piece of technology would you love for it to exist in the near future as an artist?

Well, this is a very good question and a topic that I could go on for hours, but what I’d see to be developed tech-wise would be a great thing, to give the ability for blind and physically disabled people to somehow do art as we do. Give them the ability to express themselves in amazing ways.

This thing comes from a past experience when I was working in Scotland as a Co-Worker at Rudolf Steiner Camphill Schools (2003-2004), where I was supporting two marvellous guys in special needs, and one of them was an artist. We had art therapy and believe me it was incredible what these two of my buddies would create. Then I saw the need of art being implemented in the skill development in these cases. So from that time on I am trying to support this cause in any way I can.

6-If the Internet suddenly disappeared worldwide forever, how do you think it would affect us artists?

Unfortunately the great world wide web has become an everyday part of our artistic lives and doings, it merged into our way of thinking and ways of expressing ourselves - if it's not in Instagram/Facebook it does not exist kinda thing - but don't forget the old times when people did not have this technology and were writing letters, made exhibitions in galleries and the only source of news - art or any other - was the newspapers and tv.

Probably artists would struggle at first, but with time the old ways would emerge from the deep. But the great thing in it would be that we would go back to the basics, like for inspiration, and go outside with our sketchbooks and pens and do sketches, go to exhibitions by others in real life. Speak to each other personally face to face, write letters and the list goes on.

It would bring back TRUE value of art in my honest opinion.

7-When did you discover digital art? How was your first ever experience with Procreate? What role plays Procreate in your everyday life?

Digital art became part of my work and life in the early 90’s. In high school (Hungary) we had one MAC that had Photoshop 1.0 on it, Oh boy the excitement that I had that I could do artwork on a computer, then when the first digital drawing tables came out by Genius and Wacom I had a chance to lay my hands on an Intuos 3 - A4 - that changed the whole approach to drawing. I was “infected” by the possibilities of having a pressure responsive pen as a tool, and doing creative work in illustrator and photoshop.

As time passed on and Savage Interactive released Procreate in 2011, it opened a whole new era in my digital drawing life. 2018 marks the beginning of Procreatization of my art. Got my iPad Pro and instantly bought Procreate (still using the same hardware). Since then I am using it for all of my work and art. Sketching logos, doing drafts for typographic layouts, 3d drafts which are then put together in 3d software through illustrations for children books and such.

I can honestly say that Procreate is one of the best assets that we artists have the opportunity to work with. But do not forget those people who are attributors, who add their own knowledge and tools to the app. I had a chance to try out several brush sets from various artists (PhilipSue, BakerOne, Lobster Squirrel) but so far Ittai Manero is one of the best contributors in my honest opinion, the real feel brushes that he delivers totally changed my way of doing certain things in the process. Made me go back to the old ways in a way - not using as many layers nor effects, can do certain drawings or paintings with only one brush - tilt pressure feels like a real thing even if it's just a piece of plastic pen. Just amazing. Thank you!

8-What is your favourite Procreate Manero brush set and why?

Hardest question. When I first came upon Ittai´s sets i just could not believe how responsive they are, the real feel that matters the most for me is embedded in all of them in my opinion. So that is why this question is so hard to answer. I'd say the ones that I use the most are some of the crosshatching set and the comic-book set. But that is just a few of them. In general I go for all of them. Really can not say which is the best one, all are great.
