1 - Who are you?

My name is Tyler Oulton and I am from Tucson, Arizona. I come from a long line of art professors, tattooers, weavers, and teachers. I dropped out of art school because I was not receiving the education I was paying for, and that school no longer exists. I majored in animation and illustration. After that I took a long break from art and picked it up again a few years ago, just before the pandemic. I do commissions here and there, but I would love to do more, or work for a cartoon studio doing pretty much anything they’d let me.

2 - What do you do for a living? How does making art fit in your life?

I currently work for a hospital in financial assistance, making sure underprivileged people can afford to give birth when they are not covered by insurance. Pretty much when I am not working I am drawing or painting. The older I get the shorter my attention span has gotten and art is the only thing I can seem to focus on.

3 - How would you describe your art style? What do you think helped you develop it?

I like to think of my style as eclectic. I pull from so many different sources. My mom grew up on Okinawa so I was introduced to anime and manga from the very beginning, and my dad always had a Looney Tunes quote for every occasion. I grew up on the Southside of Tucson, which had a large graffiti “community” so that was always around me. Around high school I got really into Renaissance art and my love of the classics and fine art grew from there.

4 - What helps you find inspiration personally?

Inspiration comes from almost anywhere. A cool scene in a movie or show. A song. A dumb thought like “what would it look like if a skeleton could smoke cigarettes” or “what if Sesame Street ended at Skid Row?” Sometimes just a new tool, like a brush or paint. Inspiration usually comes from something I haven’t done before.

5 - Name a couple or three artists that you admire, and that made an influence in your own art.

Akira Toriyama is probably the first, I wanted to be a manga artist when I grew up. I still do. DaVinci feels like an easy one, but his old man sketches made me realize how much more fun it is to draw regular people than beautiful, flawless people. And Kim Jung Gi/Karl Kopinski/Yuko Shimizu all make me desperately want to get better with a brush pen.

6 - When did you discover digital art? How was your first ever experience with Procreate? What role plays Procreate in your everyday life?

My first experience with digital art was in college and I did not like it. I was very resistant to it and it wasn’t fun for me. I dabbled with it a couple times over the years in GIMP but always gave up because I was able to do what I wanted with traditional art better and faster. Then in late 2020 I got an iPad and Procreate so I could make designs for my Redbubble. Everybody told me it was easy because it worked a lot like other digital painting apps, but the problem was that I was not familiar with ANY digital painting apps, so I was really starting from the bottom as a beginner. I goofed around with Procreate occasionally for about a year or so and it wasn’t really until the past year when I really started using Procreate almost exclusively. I use it every day and now I worry I won’t be able to draw the old fashioned way anymore!

7 - What would you tell someone approaching Procreate for the first time?

Look up tutorials on YouTube. It's fun to mess around and experiment, but as a person who was unfamiliar with digital art, all the layer modes, masks, selections, and other tools with variables were very confusing and ultimately frustrating. Sometimes I would get lost in a tutorial or the person would skip a step assuming the viewer knew how to do it. Which is why my second tip is perseverance. If you keep at it eventually it all becomes second nature and you will learn all the short cuts and quick menus.

8 - What is your favorite Procreate Manero brush set and why?

Right now my favorite Manero brush sets are The Comic-Book Artist because it has plenty of liner brushes that give you all kinds of textures and weight to experiment with, and Paint & Chill set for the same reason; theres a ton of textures to experiment with and explore different materials.
